Sterile air and steam

Steam Filtration for Reliable Process Safety

Steam is often used where hygiene, product protection and equipment uptime matter. A correct steam filtration setup removes particles before they reach critical points of use. That protects product quality, valves, sterilizers, filling lines and clean process equipment.

Cleaner steam Removes rust, scale and process particles before critical use points.
Better equipment protection Helps reduce fouling, erosion and contamination risk in downstream equipment.
Why use steam filtration

What steam filtration improves in practice

Direct process benefits

  • Protects product quality, by reducing the risk of particles entering sterile or hygienic processes.
  • Protects equipment, less particulate load on valves, traps, heat exchangers and sterilizing points.
  • Supports stable operation, cleaner steam means fewer unwanted interruptions and less downstream cleaning.
  • Improves compliance, useful where clean utility design and documented filtration matter.
  • Extends service intervals, lower contamination load can reduce maintenance pressure on critical equipment.

Typical steam filtration setup logic

  • Choose filtration grade, 1, 5 or 25 µm based on product risk and process sensitivity.
  • Select housing by pressure, use P-DD up to 16 bar, use P-ED2 above 16 bar and up to 25 bar.
  • Size from steam flow, use the flow table and apply correction factor K1 for operating pressure.
  • Match housing and element size, each NP-GS element size maps to a housing size and connection.
  • Keep differential pressure under control, the reference flow table is based on 0.5 bar differential pressure at 1 bar saturated steam.

Steam filtration is presented by Nordic Filtration as relevant for product quality, reliability and equipment protection in industrial process applications.

Applications

Where steam filtration is commonly used

Steam filtration is used where clean steam supports product safety, controlled sterilization or stable process performance.

  • Food and beverage production, especially where steam contacts equipment or packaging zones.
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech processes, including sterile support utilities and clean process lines.
  • Dairy and brewery plants, where hygiene and repeatable cleaning processes matter.
  • Chemical and process industry, where particles in steam can affect equipment performance and product quality.
  • Autoclaves, sterilizers, SIP duties and clean utility distribution points.

Nordic Filtration positions steam filtration for food, pharmaceutical and industrial process environments where contaminants in steam must be removed before critical use.

Selection guide

Steam filter sizing table, housing choice and correction factor

Use the table below as the practical selection base. The listed flow values are reference capacities at 1 bar, 121°C saturated steam and 0.5 bar differential pressure. For higher operating pressure, apply the correction factor table shown underneath.

Selection topic Recommended approach Notes
Filtration grade 1 µm, 5 µm, or 25 µm Choose based on process sensitivity and particle load.
Housing up to 16 bar P-DD Preferred housing for steam filtration where operating pressure stays at or below 16 bar.
Housing above 16 bar P-ED2 Use when pressure goes above 16 bar and up to 25 bar.
Element family NP-GS steam filter elements Match element size to housing size and required steam flow.
Pleated process option Pleated process filter with Code 7 connection Added below as a complementary cartridge option from the Nordic Filtration range.
