Ultrafiltration – Ultrapure water while maintaining mineral content

Ultrafiltration is used where there are high demands on water quality. This applies in the pharmaceutical industry, in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products and in industrial production. In the process, bacteria, parasites and viruses are removed - but minerals are retained. This happens via a membrane that removes particles down to 0.02 µm.
The systems are fully automatic and this therefore makes them easy to operate. At the same time, the design has been carried out so that the facility takes up as few square meters as possible.

Ultrafiltration - Advanced water treatment for your industry

At Nordic Filtration, we understand the critical need for clean, purified water across various industries. Ultrafiltration (UF) is a key water treatment technology that allows us to provide solutions for achieving superior water quality. It's a precise, pressure-driven membrane process that effectively removes a wide range of contaminants, ensuring your processes run smoothly and your products meet the highest standards.

We specialize in delivering robust and efficient filtration systems, and Ultrafiltration plays a vital role in many of our water treatment offerings. Whether you're dealing with challenging industrial wastewater or require ultrapure water for sensitive applications, Ultrafiltration offers a reliable and environmentally friendly approach.

What is Ultrafiltration?

Ultrafiltration is a type of membrane filtration that uses a semi-permeable membrane to separate suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, and other macromolecules from water. Unlike conventional filtration methods, Ultrafiltration operates with a pore size range typically between 0.1 to 0.001 microns. This extremely fine level of filtration means it can remove much smaller particles than microfiltration but is not as fine as nanofiltration or reverse osmosis.

The process is driven by hydrostatic pressure, which forces water through the membrane while retaining larger particles on the feed side. This effectively produces a clean permeate (filtered water) and a concentrated retentate (the rejected impurities).

How Ultrafiltration differs from other membrane technologies

It's helpful to understand where Ultrafiltration fits within the spectrum of membrane technologies we offer, such as our reverse osmosis systems and other water treatment solutions.

Here's a quick comparison:

Technology Pore Size Removes
Microfiltration (MF) 0.1 - 10 µm Suspended solids, bacteria
Ultrafiltration (UF) 0.001 - 0.1 µm Bacteria, viruses, colloids
Nanofiltration (NF) <0.001 µm Hardness, small organics
Reverse Osmosis (RO) <0.0001 µm Dissolved salts, ions

Filtration down to 0.001 - 0.1 µm Filtration down to 0.001 - 0.1 µm

What can you achieve with Ultrafiltration?

Integrating Ultrafiltration into your water treatment process can unlock significant benefits, enhancing both operational efficiency and product quality. At Nordic Filtration, we leverage UF technology to help businesses achieve specific objectives:

  • Enhanced Pre-treatment for RO Systems: Ultrafiltration is an excellent pre-treatment step for our reverse osmosis systems. By removing suspended solids, colloids, and microorganisms, UF protects the more sensitive RO membranes from fouling, extending their lifespan and reducing cleaning frequency.

  • Improved Product Quality: In industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology, the quality of water directly impacts the final product. Ultrafiltration ensures that process water is free from undesirable particles, bacteria, and viruses, leading to a purer and more consistent end product.

  • Wastewater Treatment and Reuse: Ultrafiltration provides an effective method for treating industrial wastewater, making it suitable for discharge or even reuse within your facility. This contributes to sustainability efforts and can significantly reduce operational costs associated with fresh water intake and wastewater disposal.

  • Drinking Water Purification: For municipal or private water supplies, Ultrafiltration can reliably remove pathogens and turbidity, producing safe, clean drinking water that meets stringent regulatory standards.

  • Reduced Chemical Usage: The physical barrier of an Ultrafiltration membrane often reduces the need for chemical coagulants or disinfectants, leading to a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective treatment process.

What does Ultrafiltration remove from water?

The effectiveness of Ultrafiltration lies in its ability to target and remove a broad spectrum of impurities. This makes it a versatile solution for various water treatment challenges. Specifically, Ultrafiltration systems from Nordic Filtration are designed to remove:

  • Suspended Solids: Tiny particles, silt, and other matter that cause turbidity in water are effectively blocked by UF membranes.

  • Bacteria: The small pore size of UF membranes is sufficient to remove almost all types of bacteria from water, significantly improving microbiological quality.

  • Viruses: While some viruses can be extremely small, Ultrafiltration membranes are generally effective at removing most common viruses, providing a strong barrier against viral contamination.

  • Colloids: These are stable dispersions of fine particles that are larger than molecules but too small to be seen with the naked eye. UF excels at removing colloids that often cause membrane fouling in downstream processes.

  • Endotoxins: In pharmaceutical and medical applications, endotoxins can be a major concern. Ultrafiltration can effectively remove these pyrogens, crucial for sterile processes.

  • Proteins and Macromolecules: In various industrial and biochemical processes, UF is used for separation and concentration of proteins and other large organic molecules.

For applications where even finer filtration is required, such as the complete removal of dissolved salts, we would integrate Ultrafiltration as a crucial pre-treatment step for our reverse osmosis systems, which excel at removing ions and achieving very high purity levels with salt reduction percentages of 98-99%.
